Applicants whose research interests advance the department’s strategic vision of establishing itself as a world leader in the broadly-defined area of bio-health devices (from basic molecular underpinnings to modeling to instrumentation) will be most strongly considered. Successful candidates will be expected to help propel the Bioengineering program forward in prestige and impact, through research, education, outreach, and service.

About the Fischell Department of Bioengineering
The Department has been catalyzed by a transformational gift of $31 million from Robert E. Fischell and family, and more recently by two new buildings, one that will be dedicated to the Department by 2016. It has faculty members in cross-disciplinary areas of bioengineering, as well as active involvement from colleagues across campus and at neighboring institutions. The undergraduate program is highly sought after by the most talented high school students in Maryland and elsewhere, and the graduate program’s reputation has been steadily growing.
As an integral part of a vibrant community of scientists and engineers across the University System of Maryland, the Department interfaces with the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Maryland Nanocenter, the Center for Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine, Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute, and the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research. In addition, its location in the greater Washington, D.C. area provides access to vast research resources and facilities in the immediate vicinity, including those at NIH, FDA, NIST, DOD, USDA, EPA, NASA, and Children’s National Medical Center, as well as over 600 Maryland biotech companies.

    Required Qualifications
Candidates must have Ph.D. or equivalent in engineering, biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, or closely related field, and must be actively engaged in research and scholarship. Competitive applicants will possess an outstanding track record of achievement, a strong potential for developing a thriving, collaborative research program, as well as a firm commitment to undergraduate/graduate education and student mentorship.
