Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) is an affiliate of the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation. The mission of SPF is sustainably improving the situation of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) through clinical and interdisciplinary research on a national and international level. Specific areas of its comprehensive research include human functioning, social integration, quality of life, health services provision as well as health communication.
We are presently looking for a
PHD CANDIDATE IN HUMAN MOVEMENT SCIENCES
The successful applicant will work in a multidisciplinary environment in a research project focused on identifying risk factors for shoulder overuse complaints in persons with SCI. The PhD project will follow two tracks: one on shoulder dyskinesia as cause of shoulder overuse complaints and the relation to lesion level, and one on the effect of restoration of elbow function on the risk for shoulder overuse complaints.
This PhD project is part of a collaboration between SPF, the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences of the VU University Amsterdam, and the Center for Human Movement Sciences of the University Medical Hospital Groningen, University of Groningen. The PhD project will be performed at SPF in Nottwil under the supervision of Dr. Ursina Arnet, Prof. Veeger and Prof. van der Woude.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Human Movement Sciences, Biomedical Engineering or a related study with a strong emphasis on biomechanics
- Ambition to combine fundamental research with work in a clinical setting
- Experience in patient-oriented research and laboratory skills
- Good statistical skills, experience with the software package Matlab
- Excellent proficiency in English, very good proficiency in German
- Independent working method as well as ability to work in a team
Typical tasks include:
- Kinematic and kinetic evaluations of hand rim wheelchair propulsion and activities of daily living
- Planning and conducting of studies
- Writing of scientific papers
