    Responsibilities: This position is a tenure-track, nine-month academic year appointment with the possibility of summer teaching. Faculty duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate motor behavior and/or biomechanics courses; advising graduate students; mentoring master's and doctoral students; engaging in scholarly research and publication, including external grant proposals; and participating in service opportunities within the department, college, university, and profession. The anticipated appointment date is Fall 2014.

    Qualifications: Applicants should have the following: (1) an earned doctorate in motor behavior/biomechanics or closely related field (ABD considered but PhD must be completed before employment); (2) a strong potential for or record of academic scholarship as demonstrated by research publications and ability to secure extramural research funding; (3) a commitment to and potential for teaching excellence or a record of successful college or university teaching; and (4) potential for or history of active participation and/or leadership roles in campus, community, and professional organizations. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preference will be given to candidates with additional expertise in human research in aging, rehabilitation, neurocognition, and/or clinical biomechanics. A strong collaborative research record, prior experience working in a multi-cultural setting, and interest in Hispanic/border health issues are also preferred.

    The Department: The Department of Kinesiology (www.utep.edu/kinesiology) has a history of excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and community service. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Kinesiology and also participates in the College of Health Sciences’ Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program. Current enrollment exceeds 700 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. Faculty have successfully secured external funding and are currently involved in research related to gait and posture, falls prevention, traumatic brain injury (concussion), fitness, aging, obesity, and diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk. The Department has ongoing collaborations with local school districts, hospitals, Texas Tech University Health Science Center, and several UTEP departments including Physical Therapy and Engineering.

    The Laboratory: The Stanley E. Fulton Biomechanics and Motor Behavior Laboratory is located in the Larry K. Durham Building. The primary lab space is 2000 sq. ft. with four additional rooms for subject preparation, office space, control room, and storage. The lab is equipped with three mounted AMTI force platforms, a VICON 8-camera real-time motion capture system, an 8-channel wireless Delsys Trigno EMG system, an Applied Science Laboratories monocular eye tracking system, and a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. Additional equipment includes a PEAK MOTUS 3-D motion analysis system with automatic digitizing, WorldViz virtual reality Developer software, KT-1000 knee joint arthrometer, a Brower timing system, uniaxial and triaxial accelerometers, treadmill, and Clevemed BioCapture Pro for wireless physiological data acquisition and analysis. The Gait, Posture, and Virtual Reality Laboratory is located in the Campbell Building and contains a mounted AMTI force platform, an Applied Science Laboratories monocular eye tracking system, eMagine virtual reality goggles, and visual impairment goggles, game consoles, and access to a Tekscan pressure mat walkway system.

    The College: The College of Health Sciences provides teaching, research, and service related to the applied health sciences (http://chs.utep.edu). It has five departments (Clinical Laboratory Science, Kinesiology, Public Health Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, and Social Work), a cooperative Pharmacy program with the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, and a collaborative relationship with the University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health-El Paso regional campus. Strong collaborative ties also exist with the UTEP School of Nursing, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. The College, which is staffed by over 60 full-time faculty members and serves more than 2000 students, is nationally recognized for its innovative research in border health, and Hispanic health and health disparities. It has a record of success with NIH and external health research funding. The College was awarded $15.6 million in external funding during the past five years for innovative health research projects. College faculty conduct research spanning basic and clinical science, from community to global health. The breadth of their research expertise includes health education and promotion, health literacy, chronic and communicable disease prevention and management, maternal-child health, nutrition, exercise science, disability and rehabilitation sciences, social stigma, and mental health. A cadre of graduate students assists faculty in conducting a variety of projects relevant to improving health outcomes in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Our $60 million 138,000 sq. ft. building on the main campus houses state-of-the-art clinical and research laboratories, innovative teaching and clinical simulation spaces, and faculty and administrative offices.
