Virginia Tech Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics

The Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM) at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position as an experimentalist in one of the general areas of dynamical systems, fluid mechanics, or solid mechanics. The appointment will be at the rank of assistant professor. Successful applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant field of science or engineering, and are expected to: have a strong and broad scholarly interest in the mechanical sciences, develop and maintain an active, externally-funded research program, and teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Intellectual depth is more important than the specific area of specialization.

ESM is a highly interdisciplinary department, so experience in this regard is desirable. Our twenty-four faculty members support over eighty doctoral students and work closely with colleagues in other engineering and science departments, as well as interdisciplinary institutes on campus. Faculty members are involved in several large research programs including an NSF IGERT program on multi-scale transport in environmental and physiological systems, an NSF EFRI program on complex microsystem networks inspired by internal insect physiology, and collaborative centers with Air Force and Army Research Laboratories. For more information about ESM see the website www.esm.vt.edu. Additional information about Virginia Tech (www.vt.edu), the College of Engineering (www.eng.vt.edu), and the town of Blacksburg (www.blacksburg.va.us) is also available online.

Applicants must apply online at www.jobs.vt.edu to posting number TR0130078. Include a cover letter, a full CV including a list of publications, a research statement, a teaching statement, and the contact information for five references whom the search committee may contact at its discretion. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2013, and will continue until the position is filled. The expected starting date is August 10, 2014.
Virginia Tech is committed to the principle of diversity and seeks a broad spectrum of candidates.
