  • Mechanical / Biomedical Engineering PhD Graduate Position - University of Calgary

    Position: PhD Graduate Student
    Deadline: Open
    Type: Full-Time, 4 years
    Discipline: Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering
    Location: Calgary, AB
    # of Pos: 1

Application to: University of Calgary Clinical Movement Assessment Laboratory (Dr. Janet Ronsky and/or Gregor Kuntze)

The University of Calgary Clinical Movement Assessment Laboratory (CMAL) is seeking to fill a graduate student position for a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta. The CMAL is working in collaboration with the Alberta Osteoarthritis Team, a provincial research collaboration of the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, to investigate the effects of post traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) on knee joint mechanics and biology. Tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament is a traumatic injury of the knee joint that affects the articulation and stability of the joint. Long term consequences of knee trauma include the onset of progressive joint degeneration conditions such as tibio-femoral osteoarthritis. PTOA is related to changes in the local movement and loading environment of the injured knee joint that may be observed using advanced Dual Fluoroscopy (DF) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. While current clinical assessment tools are largely restricted to diagnosing established OA, such advanced DF and MRI tools provide the means to probe for early changes and work toward early disease intervention. In pursuit of an earlier diagnosis of PTOA the CMAL has been investigating the complex relations between knee joint mechanics and joint injury and is applying a novel assessment approach for a combined investigation of joint mechanics and biology in injury.

The successful applicant will primarily work to further the assessment of the effects of joint deficiency using a state-of-the-art high-speed DF system and clinical MR imaging. Using exercise as a means to probe the effects of ligament deficiency, the applicant will explore, quantify, and evaluate joint and/or tissue mechanics and joint morphology and/or tissue structure changes in PTOA. Additionally, the student will manage their PhD program requirements, overall PhD project details including data collection, input into project direction, internship and summer student collaboration, and collaboration with physicians and our Biomedical Engineering group.

    Qualifications/Expertise:
    - Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering (Mechanical or Mechanical with BME specialization is preferred)
    - A working knowledge of C++ , Matlab, and Windows
    - Strongly motivated individual capable of working independently
    - Proficient in written and oral English presentation

Interested applicants are invited to apply with CV and cover letter by email to:
