The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, a not-for-profit center for engineering and research and development, is seeking an Assistant Program Manager to work closely with the Biomechanics & Injury Mitigation Systems (BIMS) Program Manager in leading a diverse and expanding portfolio of projects. The selected candidate will partner with the Program Manager to create and sustain a culture of technical excellence through innovation and building a dynamic, motivated team dedicated to impact biomechanics research for improved injury protection.
The successful candidate will:
• Partner with the Program Manager to lead a core BIMS project focused on experimental injury biomechanics, anthropomorphic dummy design, high-fidelity human computational modeling and systems engineering.
• Provide project leadership and management for a subset of existing BIMS projects focused on injury prevention and develop and foster a trusted relationship with sponsor representatives.
• Partner with the BIMS Program Manager in conceptualizing and pursuing new research initiatives and develop and compose proposals which effectively communicate BIMS capabilities, concepts and research approach.
• Work closely with the Program Manager in developing and maintaining a vision/strategy for the BIMS Program.
Candidates must possess a BS in relevant scientific or engineering discipline with at least 7 years of relevant experience. The successful candidate will be an expert in all or a subset of human surrogate design and biofidelity assessment, impact biomechanics testing, human finite element modeling and personal protective equipment (armor) evaluation in blast and ballistic loading. Strong demonstrated skills in leadership of multi-disciplinary technical teams, organization, and planning as well as a demonstrated ability to manage performance, cost, and schedule through the full life cycle of a project is key.
This position will require a Secret Clearance. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
About BIMS: The APL Biomechanics and Injury Mitigation Systems (BIMS) Program, a component of the Research and Exploratory Development (RED) Business Area, focuses on developing experimental and computational tools for modeling the human body, realistically simulating injurious impact events, and employing these resources to evaluate and improve the efficacy of existing and novel injury mitigation strategies. The BIMS team of engineers and scientists combine mechanics, biology, physics, and materials science with a systems approach to understanding the threat-mitigation-human chain. High-fidelity human models, both physical surrogates and multi-scale computational models, were developed to quantify response, injury risk and thresholds. A 5,000 square foot Impact Biomechanics Laboratory supports experimentation and houses a deceleration crash sled, impact pendulum, high-rate materials testing systems, high-speed imaging, and shock tube. The BIMS Program continues to provide an increased understanding of biomechanics and injury mitigation to a wide range of U.S. government sponsors including the Army, Navy, SOCOM, Marine Corps, NASA and Department of Transportation.
