We are immediately seeking a dynamic individual to join our growing team as a Lab Engineer at the Spaulding National Running Center, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School. The candidate must demonstrate superior organizational, time management, and communication skills, as well as intellectual independence and initiative. He/she will protect confidential and sensitive research data with integrity. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.
The Spaulding National Running Center (SNRC) is a clinical and research entity aimed at helping individuals to remain active and injury free throughout their lifetime. Our research is aimed at understanding the relationships between lower extremity structure, mechanics and musculoskeletal injury. We are also interested in developing strategies and interventions that help to mitigate injury risk. While the focus of our research is on running, our interests extend to injuries related to walking as well. Our research encompasses imaging and modeling, as well as experimental studies. As a result of the focus of our research, our past, current and future studies relate to the following areas:
Dynamic imaging of the patellofemoral joint during dynamic activities
Dynamic imaging of the foot and ankle during dynamic activities
Gait retraining to reduce abnormal mechanics
Structural and biomechanical factors related to musculoskeletal injuries
Barefoot and Minimal footwear running
Amputee gait
Mobile monitoring of gait
Job Responsibilities
Ensure that the laboratory’s technical infrastructure (both hardware and software) remains in optimal working order. This includes ensuring that hardware is maintained and that software is up-to-date
Writes custom software applications when needed.
Assists with data collection for ongoing research studies (Vicon passive infra-red camera system, AMTI strain-gauge force plates, force sensing instrumented treadmill, electromyography, accelerometry)
Reduce data to graphical and other formats appropriate for the research question being addressed.
Identify new data collection and reduction techniques, and new areas of application for biomechanical analyses; assist with the development of associated new software and protocols for the laboratory.
Assist with custom hardware design and manufacture and act as the liaison between the SNRC and local machine and electronic shops.
Oversee IRB documentation, subject recruitment and data management for ongoing amputee gait retraining study.
Qualifications
Masters’s degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering or related field. Proficiency in Matlab, labview, database software and operating systems. Experience working in a motion analysis laboratory is preferred.
If interested, please email a cover letter, resume and the contact information for two referees to:
