Institution: The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. As South Carolina's only comprehensive academic health science center providing a full range of programs in the biomedical sciences, MUSC is engaged in activities statewide and is recognized nationally for excellence in interprofessional education. The Medical University of South Carolina is a research intensive university with an academic health center. In FY2011, MUSC faculty received grants and contracts totaling $240 million. Funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) increased to $103.3 million.
Position and Collaborative Arrangements: The Department of Health Science and Research, chaired by Steve Kautz, PhD, is searching for a senior faculty member to join a dynamic and growing program. The Department is housed in the Center for Rehabilitation Research in Neurological Conditions (CRRNC), within the College of Health Professions at Medical University of South Carolina in beautiful and historic Charleston, South Carolina. We are seeking an established investigator (Associate or Full Professor) to join a dynamic and productive team of senior investigators and junior faculty members with a research focus in theory-based measurement and treatment of persons with impairments due to stroke, spinal cord injury or other neurological conditions (http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/...arch/index.htm). The ideal candidate is expected to be transformative, establishing new areas of translational research and new collaborations within the CRRNC and across the University. We place a strong emphasis on the candidate’s ability to build and strengthen collaborations with College of Medicine programs in Neuroscience, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Bioengineering. Applications from underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged.
Our research team conducts studies of measurement and treatment in order to develop theoretical frameworks for understanding normal and impaired mechanisms of both control of movement and acquisition of motor behavior. We are particularly interested in researchers with innovative ideas and approaches in the areas of brain-machine interface applied to rehabilitation including the use of electrocorticography; brain stimulation; rehabilitation robotics; upper extremity function and rehabilitation; motor learning; cognitive rehabilitation; and balance and falls. However, all areas of neurorehabilitation will be considered. Candidates must possess a PhD in rehabilitation science, bioengineering or a related field that can contribute to neurorehabilitation. Secondary academic appointments with teaching opportunities are available for qualified applicants, with current members of the research group also holding joint appointments in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Bioengineering. There are also strong collaborations with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and applicants interested in a joint VA research appointment are strongly encouraged to apply (need not be a current VA investigator).
Substantial resources are available for performing innovative neurorehabilitation research. While the research program is based on the concept of shared common core resources, start-up funds and space (more than 1300 additional square feet) are available to establish new laboratories. Current state of the art laboratory facilities (http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/...ries/index.htm) include: Upper Extremity Motor Function Laboratory, Locomotor Energetics and Assessment Laboratory, Locomotor Rehabilitation Laboratory, Motor Performance Laboratory, and Communication and Swallowing Laboratory.
The environment: With a rich 300 year history, Charleston today is America's most beautifully preserved architectural and historical treasure and offers a wide variety of history, culture, arts, recreation and beautiful beaches. Charleston, the second largest city in South Carolina, is situated midway up the state’s Atlantic Ocean coastline at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. Originally named “Charles Towne” when founded in 1670, Charleston had 16,000 residents in 1790 and has grown to a population of just over 120,000 residents as of 2010.
Charleston, South Carolina has been voted, for the second consecutive year, “Top City in the United States” in the Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards. Charleston is home to the Charleston International Airport, Joint Base Charleston (Air Force & Navy), iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, Port Of Charleston, Spoleto Festival USA, Dock Street Theatre, Rainbow Row, Patriots Point, Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie, among many other local attractions. A city with no shortage of delicious dining options, Bon Appetit named Charleston’s Husk “Best New Restaurant in America” in 2011. Various sports teams play out of Charleston, including the Charleston Battery (USL Professional Division soccer, 3-time league champions), Charleston RiverDogs (South Atlantic League baseball, affiliate of the New York Yankees), and the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL hockey, 3-time league champions).
In addition to the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston is home to other institutions of higher education, including the College of Charleston, The Citadel, Charleston Southern University, Charleston School of Law, Trident Technical College, the American College of the Building Arts, and the Art Institute of Charleston.
