Assistant Professor of Kinesiology (Emphasis in Biomechanics)

The Position: The College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville invites nominations and applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Kinesiology (Emphasis in Biomechanics) in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Teach graduate classes in Biomechanics and undergraduate classes in Exercise Science
2) Establish a research agenda in Biomechanics, producing refereed publications and presentations and securing external funding
3) Supervise theses, dissertations, and honors projects
4) Advise both undergraduate and graduate students
5) Provide service to the department, college, university, community, and profession
Required Qualifications:
1) Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in Kinesiology/Exercise Science with an emphasis in Applied Biomechanics at the doctoral or post-doctoral level
2) Evidence of refereed publications, presentations, and external funding/awards
3) Ability to be an effective teacher and mentor
Appointment and Salary: This is a 9-month, tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and background. The anticipated starting date is August 18, 2014.
The Program: The Exercise Science program in Kinesiology has a strong reputation for having quality students, high standards, and a student-centered faculty. Faculty in Exercise Science are committed to providing experiential opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, including research mentoring
and interdisciplinary collaborations in the Human Performance Lab. Exercise Science is one of the fastest growing programs on the campus with approximately 700 undergraduates and 75 graduate students (Master of Athletic Training, M.S., Ph.D.). An increase in student numbers in the last five years has warranted the addition of new faculty. Our students represent a diverse background with academic interests in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and athletic training. The Exercise Science faculty has successfully collaborated with faculty in Nursing, Biological Sciences, Animal Science, Engineering, and Environmental Life Sciences.
The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL): Located in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation, the HPL provides ~7,000 sq. ft. of research space for high-level research. Areas of research interest include the following: thermoregulation, body composition, muscle function, biomechanics, injury prevention, concussion studies, and cardiovascular. Housed within the HPL is the equipment necessary to perform this research. Some of the major equipment includes an environmental chamber, DEXA, underwater weighing, Biodex, PEAK, MotionMonitor, Doppler ultrasound, ParvoMedics metabolic cart, and wireless EMG.
The Department: The Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation is one of five academic units in the college. The department offers fully accredited undergraduate (B.S.E.) and graduate degree programs (M.Ed., M.S., Ed.D., Ph.D.) with over 1,500 students, 21 graduate assistants, and 26 full-time faculty members.
University and Location: The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville serves as the major center of liberal and professional education and as the primary land-grant campus in the state with 25,000 students. It is Arkansas’ major source of theoretical and applied research and the provider of a wide range of public services to people throughout the state and nation. The Carnegie Foundation categorizes the University of Arkansas as a research institution with “very high research activity”, placing the University among the top 108 universities nationwide and in a class by itself within the state of Arkansas. U.S. News and World Report has ranked the University among the top tier of institutions of higher education as well as one of the top ten national “Up-and-Comers” of public universities. In 2012, the Chronicle of Higher Education named the University of Arkansas one of the top universities to work for based on surveys of our employees. Fayetteville is located in the beautiful Ozark Mountains in the northwest corner of the state with an approximate population of 75,000 residents. The city and area have been featured in numerous publications as a very desirable and economical place to live and most recently was listed by Money magazine as one of the “100 Best Places to Live.” Outside Magazine recently ranked the University of Arkansas as one of its “top 25 outdoor colleges” based on proximity to Buffalo River, Beaver Lake, state parks, and regional trails and greenways.
