Position: Full-Time Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory Manager/Research Specialist
Applications are invited for a Laboratory Manager/Research Specialist position in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UC Davis Medical Center. The Lawrence J. Ellison Musculoskeletal Research Center provides resources for faculty, residents, fellows, medical students, graduate and undergraduate students and visiting scholars to conduct broadly interdisciplinary research in tissue and cellular biomechanics, regeneration and repair. The 8,000 square-foot center houses a machine shop, materials testing laboratory, cell and molecular biology laboratory, histology laboratory, tissue culture facilities, microscopy laboratory and microsurgery suite. Computing facilities are available for mathematical modeling of mechanical stresses in skeletal structures and implants. In addition, the laboratories use an outstanding animal research facility at the 160-acre Animal Resources Service facility on the Davis campus.
Position Duties:
The responsibilities of the Laboratory Manager/Research Specialist may include:
1. Conducting biomechanics research projects in collaboration with clinical faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, specifically involving mechanical testing of synthetic and cadaveric musculoskeletal tissues using materials testing systems, and kinematics/motion analysis of isolated joints.
2. Design and machining of custom fixtures and components for biomechanics research.
3. Management of research animals, including assisting with anesthesia, injections, surgical procedures, dissections, etc.
4. Laboratory management, including ordering and maintenance of general lab supplies, controlled substances inventory, environmental health and safety compliance, human body parts inventory, cleaning and organizing of the lab.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
- M.S. in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering, Kinesiology/Exercise Science, or closely related field. B.S. with appropriate experience will also be considered.
- Experience with materials testing systems and/or motion analysis systems
- Machine shop experience
- Experience working with animals
- Strong written and oral communication
- Experimental design, data analysis, and statistics
