  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Tribo-Corrosion of Total Joint Replacements

Founded in 1995, the Institute of Orthopedic Research and Education (IORE) is a non-profit 501(c)(iii) organization based in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

IORE’s accomplished team of academics and engineers has expertise in:

    • Biomechanical characterization of bone and soft-tissue constructs of all sizes
    • Real-time, non-contact measurement of the 3D deformation of biological tissues
    • Design and development of novel implantable devices
    • Reconstruction and computer-based analysis of medical imaging
    • Characterization of implantable biomaterials

Cumulatively, our experts have contributed more than 1,000 scientific publications to
    the peer-reviewed literature.

IORE’s Director of Research, Philip C. Noble, Ph.D. (Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine), brings 34 years of experience in biomechanical research to the team. Dr. Noble’s vision is to develop research programs that enhance the effectiveness and safety of orthopedic procedures and devices while providing unique academic opportunities to surgeons, trainees, and students.

Applications are invited for an interdisciplinary postdoctoral research position in Tribo-Corrosion of Total Joint Replacements. The position involves the investigation of mechanisms involved in the wear and corrosion of metal-on-metal and ceramic-on-ceramic interfaces in joint replacements; the etiology of adverse tissue reactions to the by-products of those processes, and preventative strategies through counterface modification or materials selection. The successful applicant will participate in the development of facilities for simulation of tribo-corrosion in vivo, and will perform analyses of prosthetic devices retrieved after implantation and revision. These activities will be performed in collaboration with investigators at Imperial College, University College London, and the London Implant Retrieval Centre. The research will be conducted in collaboration with a large established international team under the direction of Prof. Philip Noble (http://www.iore.net) within the Institute of Orthopedic Research & Education in the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

This position is suitable for highly motivated candidates with a strong research background in corrosion science, electrochemistry, tribology, implant retrieval and analysis, or related fields. Preference will be given to those with prior experience in publishing and grant-writing. Candidates with a demonstrated interest in failure analysis of orthopedic implants are encouraged to apply.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research, applications from all areas of chemistry, tribology, engineering and applied sciences will be considered. However, the applicants for postdoctoral position must have an earned PhD or equivalent degree.

    Application materials should include:
    1. Current CV with names and contact information of at least three references
2.*Brief statement of career goal, research background and interests
    3. Availability
