  • PhD Studentship on bone imaging & biomechanics. University of Calgary, Canada

Applications are invited for PhD graduate students interested in the area of biomedical engineering with Dr. Steven Boyd at the University of Calgary. Background should be in the areas of engineering, physics, or similar. Anticipated start date is September 2014.

    Research Project

The research project will develop quantitative medical imaging techniques using computed tomography, and integrate those data with the finite element method to establish a non-invasive assessment of bone strength. Challenges will be in developing techniques for image processing, integrating with medical imaging equipment, and establishing appropriate finite element techniques to assess bone strength. A major goal of the project is to establish these techniques for routine screening to identify people with potential osteoporosis, and to monitor changes in their bone status over time. Trainees will have the opportunity to tailor their biomedical engineering research project to reflect their background and interests.

    Training Environment

The trainee will be based at the Bone Imaging Laboratory (http://bonelab.ucalgary.ca), which focuses on research related to bone and joint diseases with emphasis on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. The lab is situated at the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health (http://mccaiginstitute.com) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Calgary. The trainee will work in a highly multi-disciplinary environment that includes clinicians, kinesiologists and engineers.

The Bone Imaging Laboratory has an array of micro-computed tomography systems (e.g., vivaCT40, µCT35, XtremeCT, XtremeCT2, Xradia XRM-520), computational equipment, mechanical testing facilities and more. A current large infrastructure project will result in several additional clinical imaging tools to be available for research in early 2015, and this includes MRI, X-ray and ultrasound imaging. Current and past trainees in the lab have had a wide range of educational backgrounds including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, kinesiology, medicine, etc, and there is excellent support from technical staff and from several other research groups performing also biomedical engineering research at the University of Calgary. The trainee would be registered in the Biomedical Engineering graduate program (http://www.ucalgary.ca/bme/graduate).

    Location

The City of Calgary is nestled in the foothills of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains and is approximately an hour away from world class skiing and hiking, outstanding camping, golf and the beautiful scenery of Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park. Calgary and surrounds has a population of approximately one million, and remains a very western flavoured community. It is the fastest growing city in Canada ranking third in Canadian cities for major head offices of large companies in Canada.

    How to Apply

For consideration, please submit by e-mail (skboyd@ucalgary.ca) a CV with contact information of at least two references, as well as a cover letter including a statement of research interests and career goals. If available, please submit recent transcripts (unofficial versions are fine at this consideration stage).
