Postdoctoral/PhD positions are available for a project called “Moving to see: the benefits of self-motion for visual perception”.

This project is a collaboration between Michele Rucci (Boston University), Simon Rushton (Cardiff University) and Eli Brenner (VU University Amsterdam). We intend to test the hypothesis that self-movement is a critical component of visual perception. To do so, we will examine how a whole range of movements, from tiny eye movements all the way to locomotion, generate useful information for guiding both perception and action. Moreover, we intend to examine whether information is generally obtained in ways that are insensitive to self-motion. The emphasis within the project will be on the visual consequences of eye movements in Boston, on perception in Cardiff, and on guidance of arm movements in Amsterdam, but all participants will be involved in all three topics and there will be ample opportunities to collaborate.

All positions are for three years, with a trial period of one year, starting as soon as possible. Salary and working conditions conform to the standards of the three universities. Postdoctoral candidates should have experience in a relevant field of research as well as previous experience with visual psychophysics, eye movement recordings, and/or the analysis of human movements. Preference is given to candidates with a strong computational background and interest in combining theoretical and experimental approaches. Due to salary constraints we expect to appoint candidates that have two years of experience or less since the award of their PhD.

General information about the groups involved can be found at the university websites:
