  • PhD Position in Mechanics of Bio-inspired Materials

Virtually all biological materials are structured in a sophisticated hierarchical way over many length scales and their outstanding mechanical properties -which are much higher than the properties of the individual constituents- are due to adaptation of the structure at all levels of hierarchy. Bio-inspired hierarchical materials is a promising research topic as it offers the possibility to improve the mechanical efficiency of man-made materials by looking at the intriguing strategies adopted by nature. The main aim of the proposed PhD is to develop novel bio-inspired cellular materials with unprecedented damage and energy absorption properties. In the proposed project, theoretical modeling and computer simulations will serve as a guide in the design of novel multifunctional materials, which will be fabricated by state-of-the-art three-dimensional multi-material polymer printing and characterized by experimental testing.

This work will be performed in the Mechanics of Biological and Bio-inspired Materials Research Unit within the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liege (Belgium). The candidate should possess a Master’s degree in Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or in a closely related field. Previous experience with computer simulation (finite element analysis) and experimental mechanical testing will be an asset. The candidate should also be proficient in English. The position is available starting from September 2014 or on mutual agreement.

For an informal discussion on the proposed project, please contact Davide Ruffoni (druffoni@ulg.ac.be).
