    Description: The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), College of Health Sciences invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Speech Language Pathology Program. This is a two-year post-doctoral position. Anticipated appointment date is Fall 2014.

    The Program: The Post Doctoral Research Fellows will pursue advanced research training from a multidisciplinary team of researchers pursuing investigations in the area of mTBI/sports related concussion. This training will take place in a variety of rotations at various sites within the university and the surrounding medical community. The Fellow is expected to develop and pursue a line of innovative and creative research dealing with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mTBI/sports related concussion. The fellow will complete a research development plan, publish in referred journals, attend training activities and related meetings The Fellow is also expected to attend national meetings and present their research products.

    Required Qualifications: (1) a doctorate in speech language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, rehabilitation counselor education, rehabilitation psychology, kinesiology, laboratory sciences or closely related area, (2) demonstrated interest in TBI and sports related concussion. ABD applicants must have earned doctorates by Oct 1, 2014. Candidates with clinical or research experience in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of TBI in persons from diverse ethnic/racial and other backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

    The Department: The Department of Rehabilitation Sciences currently includes four academic units: Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and Rehabilitation Counseling. All units offer the graduate degree (MOT, DPT, MS in SLP, MRC). In addition, a pre-professional undergraduate degree in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is also planned. Departmental faculty members actively participate in the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences PhD Program that is jointly administered by the College of Health Sciences and School of Nursing. The department has approximately 159 graduate students. Its fourteen full-time faculty members are widely recognized for their research and teaching on rehabilitation sciences in a Hispanic border context. Faculty from other disciplines and institutions also participate in this project and provide excellent research opportunities.

    The College: The College of Health Sciences provides teaching, research and service related to the applied health sciences (http://chs.utep.edu/). It has five departments (Public Health Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Science, Kinesiology, Social Work, and Rehabilitation Sciences), a cooperative Pharmacy program with the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, and a collaborative relationship with the University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health-El Paso regional campus. Strong collaborative ties also exist with the UTEP School of Nursing, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. The College is staffed by over 60 full-time faculty members and serves over 1600 students. The College is nationally recognized for its innovative research in border health, Hispanic health and health disparities. It has a record of success with NIH and external health research funding. The College was awarded $7.1 million in external funding during the past three years for its innovative health research projects. The College recently moved to its new $60 million building on the main campus in Fall 2011. This 138,000 sq. ft. facility houses state-of-the art clinical and research laboratories, innovative teaching spaces, and faculty and administrative offices.

    The University: The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a Doctoral/Research- Intensive urban university offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs to more than 23,000 students. A member of the University of Texas System (www.utsystem.edu), UTEP serves the Paso del Norte border region which includes far west Texas, southeast New Mexico, and northern Mexico. The student population closely mirrors the demographics of the region from which it draws over 90% of its students.
