Biomechanics Laboratory Engineer
BADER CONSORTIUM - NAVAL MEDICAL CENTER SAN DIEGO
The incumbent is employed by the University of Delaware, but is located at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
This is a grant funded position and continuation of the position is contingent upon continued funding. Notice of non-renewal is not required.
The BADER Consortium is a 5-year (started October 2011), $19.7 million Department of Defense cooperative agreement between the Congressionally Designated Medical Research Program (CDMRP), Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) and the University of Delaware. As the heartbeat of the BADER Consortium, the Clinical Research Core (CRC) will support the conduct of numerous multi-site clinical research trials across a broad array of North American sites. These sites include Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) in California, Texas, Virginia and Maryland. The CRC will do this by instituting a uniform and sustainable research infrastructure that will facilitate ongoing and new clinical research trials across all MTF and additional government and civilian research sites.
CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Serves as Gait Analysis/Biomechanics Laboratory Coordinator in support of the Naval Medical Center San Diego – a Department of Defense Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) located in San Diego California. The aim of the Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) is to provide state-of-the-art care for wounded service members as they return to the highest levels of physical, psychological and emotional function. The Medical Treatment Facility provides injured military members with the best technology available to precisely analyze and interpret movement dysfunctions. Personnel from the MTFs provide clinical gait analysis services, conduct research to improve patient management, and provide education and training in leading-edge care and rehabilitation.
This is a full-time position in direct support of research protocols involving assessment, rehabilitation and training of individuals who have experienced an extremity trauma. The incumbent will assist with software and hardware support within the MTF under direction of the Principal Investigator. The responsibilities will include integrating MATLAB into the laboratory environment to run various clinical tests, manage patient and subject information and aiding in the development of research tools. The work involves a considerable amount of variety and complexity of data, information, resources, regulations, and technical requirements. Data entry and manipulation may be complex and may require deduction of relationships between many differing factors and independent initiative in pursuing those many differing factors and relationships. A variety of oral and written guidelines and instructions are used in carrying out the duties of this position. Incumbent is trained to independently interpret and follow procedures and guidelines, as well as adapt to a variety of assigned tasks where guidelines are not specific or are nonexistent. Independent judgment is required in determining specific procedures to be followed, sources to be used and technical compliance with standards and requirements. The function of this position is to provide essential support to clinical and research studies conducted in the MTFs. The accurate collection, analysis and reporting of motion analysis or other physical performance assessment results is imperative to successful completion of research projects. The lab at NMCSD includes: computerized 3D motion capture (MAC system), instrumented treadmill (AMTI), metabolic system (Carefusion), pressure measurement system (Pedar), IMU’s (ADPMs), and cycle ergometer(Lode).
This is a grant funded position and continuation of the position is contingent upon continued funding. Notice of non-renewal is not required.
