  • Sanford Sports Science Institute - Clinical Biomechanist

The Clinical Biomechanist for the Sanford Sports Science Institute (SSSI) will be responsible for performing sport-related biomechanical assessments in support of client, outpatient and athlete services, and most notably, to serve as the operator/technician of the SSSI’s state-of-the-art biomechanics systems. Current equipment includes AMTI force plates, high speed video cameras, Simi motion analysis software and an h/p/cosmos® treadmill with an embedded Zebris® force and pressure distribution platform. These biomechanical instruments are used by Sanford POWER sports therapists at the Sanford Runner’s Clinic to evaluate injured runners, and as the cornerstone of the comprehensive gait analysis offered by Sanford’s Running Performance Services, which targets healthy athletes who want to optimize their performance. The Sanford POWER Sports Therapy program also relies on quantitative biomechanical assessments for its Return-to-Play evaluation of athletes undergoing rehabilitation for ACL reconstruction and other lower extremity injuries. The Clinical Biomechanist/Research Associate III will also conduct sport-specific biomechanical testing and provide coaching/instruction to Sanford POWER clients. Thus, in addition to working with SSSI staff, the Clinical Biomechanist/Research Associate III will work closely with a team of sports rehabilitation therapists and performance enhancement specialists at Sanford POWER. This individual will be expected to develop expertise and competence in operating the aforementioned biomechanical systems, creating assessment reports, and conducting performance-based evaluations, which will include appropriate feedback and training recommendations. The successful candidate will play an integral role in helping to develop and advance all biomechanical athlete services offered by SSSI, Sanford POWER and Sanford POWER Sports Therapy.

The second major responsibility of the Clinical Biomechanist/Research Associate III will be to assist with existing and future research studies at SSSI. Current areas of research include: head impact biomechanics, diagnoses and evaluation of traumatic brain injury, and assessments of musculoskeletal injury risk. Basic to moderately complex laboratory techniques/skills will need to be utilized in the areas of applied exercise physiology and biomechanics. All research will be performed as part of a research team, and specific training required for this position will be provided. There is a particular opportunity to develop skills and expertise in the biomechanical aspects of the Institute’s research, which includes, but is not limited to, musculoskeletal injury risk assessments, quantitative measures of neuromuscular control and postural stability, and head impact biomechanics.

    Required Skills
To receive full consideration for this position, prospective candidates must have earned a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in the major field of Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Athletic Training or other closely related discipline, and have a minimum of two years experience working with clients/patients in a professional setting. Competency in Microsoft® Office and other basic computer skills is required. Experience operating biomechanical software and video capture systems, performing research in applied exercise physiology and biomechanics, and high-level athlete testing and consultation is highly desirable.
