  • Graduate Student Assistantship in Low Back Pain Research - University of Regina

Applications are invited for one Master’s level graduate student to investigate movement patterns (motion capture) and muscle activation patterns (surface electromyography) of low back pain patients during the performance of specific clinical testing manoeuvres. The student will receive a stipend as per current CUPE 2419 rates (~$22000) for one year. This funding is made available through an Establishment Grant co-funded by the Canadian Chiropractic Research Foundation and Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation.

The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies (KHS) is located in the $32 million Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport, which opened in September 2004. The Centre has outstanding laboratory and research facilities, including the fully equipped Neuromechanical Research Centre (NMRC), the Aspen Medical Centre, and the Dr. Paul Schwann Applied Health and Research Centre. The University of Regina is a comprehensive institution that emphasizes excellence in teaching, research, and service. For more details about the university, please visit the web site at http://www.uregina.ca/. The City of Regina is the seat of the Provincial Government and is renowned for the spectacular Wascana Park, the largest urban park in North America, as well as for its vibrant arts, culture, and recreation scene. The Province of Saskatchewan is currently an economic leader in Canada, enjoying unprecedented financial growth despite the recent global economic downturn.

The NMRC is a 2600 sq. ft. research space operating under the direction of Dr. Paul Bruno and Dr. John Barden. The Centre is engaged in a variety of diverse projects relating to the workings of the neuromuscular system as it relates to human movement and health. It is equipped with a 6-camera 3D Vicon MX optical tracking motion capture system, an 8-channel telemetered Delsys Trigno surface electromyography system, two force plates, and an isokinetic dynamometer.

Applicants should be highly qualified students who have a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics, or a degree in one of the health sciences (e.g. chiropractic, physical therapy, occupational therapy, massage therapy, medicine). A strong background and interest in biomechanics and neuromuscular control is vital. Experience with motion capture and/or electromyography analyses are an asset. The assistantship will be made available to students who apply for admission to the KHS program in January 2015. For consideration, individuals should submit a full CV along with the names and phone numbers of at least two references, and a one-page statement of research interests and career goals to Paul Bruno by October 1, 2014.
