    Valenciennes University and LAMIH are looking for a PhD student in biomechanics, in orderto investigate ingress/egress to/from an aircraft seat and on passenger's transfer comfort. LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201 (Laboratory of Industrial and Human Automation control,Mechanical engineering and Computer Science) is a joint research unit between University of Valenciennes and Hainaut-Cambresis (UVHC) and CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research). LAMIH acquired several pieces of experiences on biomechanics applied to low mobility citizen during past research projects, mainly funded by national research program (ANR TecSan 2006 SACR-FRM, ANR VTT 2009 VOLHAND, ANR TecSan 2012 VHIPOD).

    Research project:
    The candidate will be part of a team dedicated to an industrial consortium investigating innovative aircraft seats. One of the tasks of the consortium project consists in the adaptation of current commercial aircraft seat to mobility challenged passengers.
    To our knowledge, there is no description of 3D kinematics and dynamics of aircraft seat transfer especially when spatial constraint are considered, and this is a key issue when designing innovative seats. The PhD student will be in charge of biomechanical study of mobility impaired passengers during evolution in an aircraft cabin. Both dynamics and kinematics will be investigated, during alley evolution and during ingress and egress to/from the seat. Targeted participant will be divided into low walking passenger (with cane or walker for example) and no walking passengers (wheelchair user).

    Job description:
    The PhD student will participate to several tasks :
    - design and construction of a reproduction of a typical aircraft cabin that will serve as experimental setup
    - conduct an experimental study, including protocol design, biomechanics code development, and measurement undergoing. This study will produce knowledge of 3D kinematic and dynamic of aircraft seat transfer, as well as swept volume during ingress/egress. Seat geometric parameters will be variable in order to access the relationship between biomechanical measurement and those seat parameters. In addition, time parameters will be included, in order to access the influence of emergency on biomechanical strategies.
    - apply biomechanical models developed in previous studies by LAMIH team to aircraft seat transfer. This task should build a predictive kinematic model based on the results of the experimental study

    The PhD student will be part of the ASHM team of the LAMIH, which is located on the Mont Houy campus of Valenciennes University.

    Candidate profile:
    Master degree in biomechanics, ergonomic, mechanical engineering or human movement sciences, with experience in low mobility subjects, or computational kinematics or dynamic analysis, and a strong interest in applied and industrial research on low mobility assistance systems. Knowledge of Matlab and computational human movement analysis will be expected. Candidate should be willing to work in a French speaking environment, although French is not required.
