    Job Description
    The primary purpose of the Human Factors Design Engineer position in Houston, TX is to provide engineering support for the Anthropometry and Biomechanics Facility (ABF) at the NASA Johnson Space Center. The ABF is a component of the Research and Operations Department, which implements the scientific, engineering, and operational objectives for the Johnson Space Center. The ABF is tasked to research and evaluate flight equipment, procedures, and systems from the perspective of biomechanics, human performance, human factors, ergonomics, and anthropometry. The programs supported by the ABF include but are not limited to astronaut candidate selection, ISS operational support, design evaluation of space vehicles, space suits, tool, and test equipment, and requirements generation. Data gathered by the ABF are used to improve crew living and working conditions in order to enhance productivity, operational efficiency, and crew safety. The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art motion analysis systems, force sensing devices, and anthropometric measuring devices (including 3D scanners).


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
    • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures
    • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
    • Responsible for completing all assigned training
    • Applies engineering, biomechanics, anthropometry, and ergonomics principles, methodologies, and techniques to help improve the design and optimal use of products involving human-machine interactions
    • Develops and implements research methodologies and statistical analysis plans to test and evaluate developmental prototypes, human performance capabilities, and human-machine simulations
    • Interfaces with design engineers to establish hardware and tool use, human performance, and training requirements
    • Identifies and analyzes project and hardware problems or risks
    • Organizes, coordinates, and leads ground-based and flight testing of test subjects and astronauts
    • Prepares support documentation for studies, including test plans, Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, test readiness review packages, etc.
    • Prepares and edits technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations and presents results at formal and informal meetings
    • Demonstrates creative ability through problem solving, scientific reports, technical paper and article publications, and patent disclosures
    • Assists in performing equipment set-up, calibration, and monitoring in support of tests/evaluations
    • Assists in evaluation of equipment for safety and performance
    • May serve on committees (e.g., safety, employee activities, continuous improvement, etc.) as required
    • Performs other duties as required by management


    REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
    • A degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics, Mechanical Engineering or related field plus experience in human factors design and testing or related work.
    • Bachelor's degree plus 3 years related experience
    • Master's degree plus 0-2 years related experience


    REQUIRED SKILLS/TRAINING:
    • Must have a demonstrated record of effective individual initiative and team contribution, possess strong oral & written communications skills, strong analytical skills, and possess the ability to write proposals, project plans, and project final reports.
    • Must also be able to function as a contributor in the day-to-day activities of the ABF.
    • Must have an understanding of human performance capabilities and human-system interactions, as well as the ability to assist in human performance testing.


    DESIRED SKILLS/TRAINING:
    • Hands-on lab experience including experience in data collection, experimental design, data analysis, and motion analysis is desired.
    • Experience with 3D scanning technology and techniques is desired.
    • Experience with human modeling and simulation and parametric CAD software (preferably SolidWorks or PTC Creo) is desired.
    • Experience with test instrumentation and data acquisition systems is also desired (preferably MATLAB and LabVIEW).
