    A fully funded PhD position is available within the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Brent Edwards (Primary Supervisor) and Tannin Schmidt (Co-Supervisor). The successful applicant will be enrolled into the Faculty of Kinesiology graduate program and become part of a unique training and research environment within the multidisciplinary Human Performance Laboratory and the McCaig Instutute for Bone and Joint Health. Over the course of their studies, the doctoral student will experimentally characterize the mechanical fatigue response of human bone to different loading regimens, and utilized combined musculoskeletal and finite element modeling techniques to predict damage accumulation in human whole-bone resulting from different types and intensities of physical activity.

    The position is open to both domestic and international applicants that are in a position to begin their program between January and September 2015. Applicants should have a MSc in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, kinesiology, or equivalent. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong background in engineering mechanics to gain experience with biological materials and kinesiology research (i.e., human movement science), or vice versa. Previous experience with one or more of the following techniques is highly desirable: materials testing, cadaveric experimentation, advanced imaging analysis, musculoskeletal modeling, and finite element modeling. The successful applicant will be encouraged to apply for fellowship funding from granting agencies (e.g., NSERC, CIHR, AIHS, etc).

    Dr. Edwards (http://www.ucalgary.ca/knes_info/profiles/brent-edwards) is a musculoskeletal biomechanist with expertise in bone mechanics and computational engineering analysis. Dr. Tannin Schmidt (http://www.ucalgary.ca/knes_info/pro...tannin-schmidt) is a biomedical engineer with expertise in biomechanical, biophysical, and biochemical methods to examine normal, injured, and diseased tissue. The primary objective of the Human Performance Lab (http://ucalgary.ca/hpl) is to be the leader in both basic and applied research relating to human neuro-musculo-skeletal health and well-being, from birth to advanced age.
