Scientist/Engineer V (Impact Physics, WIAMan Test Engineer for Anthropomorphic Test Device)
The Scientist/Engineer V shall provide scientific, engineering, and analysis in the area of Impact Physics, WIAMan Test Engineer for Anthropomorphic Test Device to include:
- Dynamic response of both homogeneous and heterogeneous materials under extreme high-rate conditions
- Loading path, failure mechanisms and progressive damage to catastrophic failure of materials
- High rate material deformation and failure behavior to support development of novel ballistic protection, advanced lightweight armors for vehicles and personnel, advanced penetrators and warheads, reduced sensitivity munitions, and ammunition protection concepts.
- Operation of specialized equipment and instrumentation to perform impact physics research
- Conducting specialized research experiments in the area of impact physics
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential functions of the Scientist/Engineer V position, in the area of Impact Physics, WIAMan Test Engineer for Anthropomorphic Test Device, may be related to the following:

- Support the planning, and conduct of research on the high-rate dynamic response and failure mechanisms of materials, to develop mathematical constitutive models for metals, ceramics, polymers, certain classes of energetic materials, and biological tissues under extreme conditions created by current and advanced threats to Army systems.
- Integrate models of high-rate deformation and failure mechanisms into multidimensional, transient computational codes to predict terminal effects.
- Conduct research to devise innovative experimental techniques in solid mechanics and material response to measure material-specific parameters needed for constitutive models.
- Operate and maintain state of the art dynamic testing facilities such as light gas guns, and very high strain rate apparatus such as split Hopkinson bars.
- Research and develop formulations of material models at the micro and millimeter scales to ascertain the large-scale, dynamic response of materials at high strain rates, to include fracture and progressive damage after impact.
- Develop new advanced theories and models to describe penetration, perforation, and behind armor effects.
- Interface with academia, the Department of Energy (DoE) laboratories, and other external national and international research organizations to maintain technical cognizance and to exploit useful developments originated outside the laboratory with prior COR approval.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Scientist/Engineer Level V
- Doctorate Degree in chemistry, physics, mathematics, or Engineering that includes specialized studies in topics such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics, and twenty five (25) years of experience in a related area to Impact Physics, WIAMan Test Engineer for Anthropomorphic Test Device.
- Recognized as an expert in the area of Impact Physics, WIAMan Test Engineer for Anthropomorphic Test Device based on accepted standards such as membership on committees, publications and presentations, awards.
