Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) invites applications for the position of Professor and Department Head in Biomedical Engineering (BME).
The BME Department Head is responsible for the academic operation of the department, development of the BME faculty, and maintaining the high quality of the department’s programs and facilities. The WPI BME Department (www.wpi.edu/+BME) has undergone rapid growth in recent years, and has an ABET-accredited undergraduate program with 409 students and a graduate program with 48 students, supported by 10 tenured and tenure track faculty.
The BME Department promotes interdisciplinary and translational research in the following areas of expertise: biomechanics, biomaterials, regenerative engineering, instrumentation, bioinformatics, neuroengineering, cancer therapeutics and diagnostics, and imaging. The BME Department is housed in the $70M WPI Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center and has extensive collaborative relationships with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, which is 2 miles from the WPI campus. The BME faculty maintains a diverse portfolio of research expenditures totaling $1.7M annually from funding sources such as the NIH, NSF, DOD, and American Heart Association. This includes an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Program. Our students have received national awards such as Goldwater Scholarships, NSF, NIH, and American Heart Association Graduate Research Fellowships.
We are seeking a leader with a clear vision for elevating the national prominence of BME by growing the strengths and capabilities of the department, advancing the undergraduate and graduate programs, fostering interaction with industry, and developing interdisciplinary programs. Candidates should have a PhD in BME or a closely related field, demonstrated abilities in academic program development and leadership, excellent communications skills, and a commitment to excellence in both research and teaching.
