    Research Associate in Biomechanics

    University of Edinburgh
    - College of Humanities and Social Science

    Location: Edinburgh
Salary: £31,342 to £37,394 Per annum
    Hours: Full Time
    Contract Type: Contract / Temporary
    Placed on: 30th October 2014
    Closes: 27th November 2014
    Job Ref: 31779

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an outstanding and ambitious individual in the field of biomechanics. The University of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint a research associate to work with a team led by Dr Stelios Psycharakis on the 'WATER' project. The project is externally funded by the Chief Scientist's Office and will combine electromyography and three-dimensional videography to evaluate aquatic and land exercises that are used for strengthening and rehabilitation. The focus will be on exercises activating the main muscles supporting the trunk, with participant groups of healthy individuals and chronic low back pain patients. It is envisaged that the findings would provide an evidence base to inform clinical practice and improve quality, efficiency and effectiveness of aquatic interventions.

Applicants should have, or expect to have completed by the start date, a PhD or equivalent experience in biomechanics or related discipline. Extensive and demonstrable research experience in collection and analysis of electromyographic data, preferably in an aquatic environment, is essential. Substantial experience in video analysis is also necessary. A clinical background and previous work with clinical populations, such as low back pain patients, would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will be the main researcher working on the project, under the guidance of Dr Psycharakis and in collaboration with other members of the project team. The main responsibilities for this post will be to: recruit participants, set-up and test the EMG and video-analysis equipment, organise and run pilot studies and data collection sessions, analyse the data and have a leading role in preparing presentations, reports and publications.

The position is full-time and fixed-term for 2 years and will be available from 1 January 2015, or soon thereafter, but not later than 1 March 2015.

    Closing date: 27 November 2014, 5pm (GMT).
