Full-time, fixed-term for 36 months
Applications are invited for the post of Research Fellow in the College of Health and Life Sciences. The Research Fellow will support the research team in investigating the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of resistance training among adolscents with Cerebral Palsy, the most common cause of childhood disability. This project, funded by Action Medical Research and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Charitable Trust, will involve mixed methods using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The specific objectives of the project are to understand the biomechanical and neural adaptations to muscles and tendons following resistance training and how these affect energy efficiency, physical activity and participation. Participants’ enjoyment of resistance training and adherence to the intervention will also be evaluated.
Applications are invited from highly motivated individuals with a PhD in a relevant subject area. The post holder will have excellent communication and organisational skills, research experience with clinical populations, and an ability to work independently.

- The use of accelerometry to measure physical activity.
- The use of portable metabolic systems to measure gait efficiency.
- The use of ultrasound, motion analysis and isokinetic dynamometry to measure mechancial properties of muscles and tendons.
The main duties of the role will include:
- Conduct and facilitate a research project investigating the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of resistance training among adolescents with Cerebral Palsy.
- Co-ordinate and oversee participant recruitment from multiple clinical sites and the community.
- Co-ordinate and oversee the delivery of a resistance training programme in multiple sites.
- Co-ordinate and conduct the assessments of a physical activity, gait efficiency and muscle and tendon mechanical properties.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records to document the research progress.
- Produce high quality data for publications and presentations.
- Present results at project meetings and conferences.
- Contribute to the dissemination and publication of research findings as indicated by the PI.
- Provide guidance and assistance for more junior members of the research team.
