PhD or postdoctoral research position in soft tissue biomechanics is available in the Speech Production Laboratory in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA School of Medicine. The goal of this NIH-supported project is to better understand the biomechanical mechanisms of voice production and control, with applications to clinical management of voice disorders. The research focuses on 1) experimental characterization of the passive and active material properties of human laryngeal soft tissue and muscles; and 2) laryngeal muscular control of voice production and quality using an ex-vivo perfused human larynx model. The successful candidates will be working in a multi-disciplinary group consisting of scientists, engineers, surgeons, linguists, and speech pathologists. Strong experimental skills and some basic knowledge of biomechanics are required. Prior experience in voice production research is preferred.
