    PhD Stipend in Measurement and Modelling of Knee Laxity before and after Total Knee Replacement

    At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, a PhD stipend is available within the project:"Prediction of the functional outcome, knee stability and bearing wear after total knee arthroplasty" funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research under their Sapere Aude career program awarded to the Principal Investigator Associate Professor Michael Skipper Andersen. The stipend is open for appointment from October 1, 2015 or as soon as possible hereafter.

    The overall research project
    Knee and hip osteoarthritis (KOA and HOA) represent the most common reason for walking disability in elderly for which no cure currently exist. At advanced stages of KOA, Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is currently the only option to relieve pain and restore function of the patient. However, an array of different implant designs are currently available, which leaves the orthopaedic surgeon with the difficult task of choosing the best implant and surgical procedure for the specific patient. This choice is presently based on common practice, general guidelines and the experience of the surgeon with no guarantee that the best implant is selected. The aim of this project is to develop computational methods to predict the expected outcome of TKA and hereby aid in selecting the best performing implant for the patient. This will be accomplished using a combination of patient-specific modelling, functional outcome prediction and wear simulations. The project has six external partners: AnyBody Technology A/S, Denmark, Materialise, Belgium, Imperial College London, United Kingdom, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark and UZ Leuven, Belgium.

    PhD project
    Current knee models are typically based on generic information on human anatomy, physiology and mechanics and are, therefore, of limited applicability when studying specific research questions related to the outcome of TKA. Specifically, in the few available detailed knee models, generic information about the knee laxity is typically included. However, knee instability is known to be a major cause of early failures of TKA. The objective of the present PhD project is, therefore, to develop and validate methodologies to accurately measure knee laxity and incorporate these into a detailed musculoskeletal model of the knee joint. You will work with mechanical design and manufacturing, x-ray-based technologies for measuring joint kinematics, specifically the EOS scanning technology, and advanced computer modelling and simulations in the AnyBody Modeling System.

    Required qualifications:
    • You are a highly motivated individual who is able to work in a small team and who is prepared to stay with other network partners for extended periods of time.
    • You have a master in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, robotics, or equivalent.
    • You have experience in mechanical design, finite element analysis and multi-body dynamics.You have to be fluent in English both oral and written.


    Desired qualifications
    :
    • You have experience with musculoskeletal modelling with software packages like AnyBody or OpenSim.
    • You have experience with knee modelling.
    • You have experience with EOS scanning.
    • You have experience with segmentation of CT and MRI.
