Applications are invited, from citizens and permanent residents of South Africa and other African countries, for two PhD scholarships as part of a UCT Three-Way PhD Global Partnership Programme on “Computational Mechanobiology and Bioengineering towards Cell Therapies for Heart Attack and Heart Failure”. The project aims at studying computationally the effects of mechanobiological and the electrophysiological parameters on the efficacy of biomaterial and cell therapies in the infarcted heart.
This Three-Way PhD Global Partnership Programme is a collaboration of the University of Cape Town with Stanford University / University of California San Francisco, USA, and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Santiago, Chile. The PhD students will spend the first year at the University of Cape Town. In the second and third year of their study, the students will undertake one research visit of 3-6 months per year at Stanford University and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.
The PhD students will be expected to contribute to an aspect of the interdisciplinary project involving cell biology and biophysics, biochemistry, tissue and organ biomechanics, and mathematical and computational modelling. The research offers the opportunity to interact with team members from different scientific domains at the University of Cape Town and collaborating institutions. Research tasks will include the reporting of research outcomes in project meetings, seminars and reports, as well as the preparation of scientific papers for publication.
The scholarships will be tenable in the Mechanobiology Lab (www.biomechanics.uct.ac.za) of the Division of Biomedical Engineering (www.bme.uct.ac.za), Department of Human Biology in Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cape Town.
The value of each PhD scholarship is R150,000 per annum with a tenure of three years. Annual renewal is subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarships are available from 1 September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful incumbent has to have obtained a Master degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or related disciplines. Applicants with a Master degree in biology, physiology or a related discipline will be considered if strong knowledge in mathematics and/or physics can be demonstrated.
Further information can be obtained from Prof Thomas Franz (thomas.franz@uct.ac.za, Tel +27 21 650 1795). Applications including CV, academic transcripts, list of publications and contact details of three referees need to be submitted electronically to the abovementioned email address. Applications are accepted until 15 September 2015. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
The University of Cape Town reserves the right to cancel incomplete applications, to effect changes to the conditions of the scholarships and/or to make no awards at all.
