This position is available to start in Summer 2016 or in the Fall 2016 semester. The Department of Defense funded research project will be focused on analyzing performance and injury risk in amputee runners. This project will include experimental analysis and musculoskeletal modeling of amputee running biomechanics. This project is in close collaboration with Drs. Brian Baum and Erika Nelson-Wong in the School of Physical Therapy at Regis University. The Graduate Research Assistant will be enrolled in the CSM mechanical engineering graduate program and work closely with Regis University, while receiving mentorship from multiple PIs with varied experience.

    Required Qualifications:
    • B.S. in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering
    • Desire to conduct experimental biomechanical studies
    • Desire to develop musculoskeletal models and simulations
    • High self-motivation and persistence
    • Strong critical and analytical thinking skills
    • High attention to detail

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • M.S. in a mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering
    • Peer-reviewed conference or journal publications
    • Strong technical writing, presentation and communication skills
    • Experience with research related to amputee locomotion or prosthetic devices
    • Proficient in the following:
      • biomechanical experimental techniques including optical motion capture and electromyography
      • musculoskeletal modeling and simulation
      • programming in MATLAB and/or C++
      • human subjects experimental design and statistical analysis

    CSM is a public research university founded in 1874 and is known for its strong academic programs dedicated to engineering and applied science. CSM is located in Golden, CO against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, 15 miles west of Denver. The Functional Biomechanics Laboratory at CSM provides excellent opportunities for graduate students who want to develop research expertise in biomechanical data collection, musculoskeletal modeling and amputee biomechanics.

    Interested students should follow the official application guidelines and deadlines for the Graduate School at CSM (http://www.mines.edu/graduate_admissions), and explicitly indicate in their statement of purpose that they are interested in working with Dr. Anne Silverman. The priority application deadline for the Fall 2016 semester is December 15, 2015. In addition, interested applicants should send a letter of interest, CV or resume, and a list of three professional references to Dr. Anne Silverman at asilverm@mines.edu. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
