The University of Virginia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Center for Applied Biomechanics is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist in the field of computational biomechanics to join our dynamic research team. The successful candidate will have a leading role in developing and simulating advanced finite element (FE) models of the human body and anthropometric test devices for injury prediction during automotive and sports impacts. Responsibilities will include development of human body models, the evaluation of occupant kinematics and its interaction with the vehicle, the assessment of occupant injury risk, and the design and/or evaluation of injury counter-measures. The candidate will also have an active role in the proposal writing process and project management. Duties will include academic publishing in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, and collaboration with academic, industrial, and government research partners.
The qualified candidate will have:
· PhD in mechanical or biomedical engineering (or related discipline) with expertise in injury biomechanics (including a strong publication record)
· Experience in FE model development with LS-Dyna
· Experience with THUMS and GHBMC FE human body models
· Experience developing FE meshes using HyperMesh or similar software packages
· Proficiency in scientific programming languages (Matlab, Fortran, etc.)
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Ability to work well as a member of a team
