PhD Scholarship in Musculoskeletal Modelling
Massey University, New Zealand

The Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in musculoskeletal modelling in the Equine Group. The research is funded by the Equine Trust.

The research project will involve development of a model of the equine limb using the AnyBody® musculoskeletal modelling package, and testing the model with gait data collected from horses riding on different riding surfaces. The scholarship covers all tuition fees for international and domestic students and includes an annual tax-free stipend of NZ$25,000.

The AnyBody® package is a proprietary software system that incorporates internal muscle forces and external forces on the skeleton to compute the forces loading the skeleton during movement. The bulk of the AnyBody models developed to date have been human, and this project will develop and test an equine limb model. See the company’s web site: for further information.

Applicants should have a BSc(Hons) or MSc degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering or mechatronics. The nature of the project will require proficiency in numerical analysis and some ability to program within the AnyBody environment using AnyScript…a C++-like language.. Applications including a CV, academic transcript, and cover letter should be sent to Dr Robert Colborne, Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences, Massey University, Private Bag 11 222, Palmerston North 4442, New Zealand or by email to
