Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in “Computational Image-based Design and Modelling of Personalised Bone Implants for Advanced Manufacturing”. This unique opportunity will enable an exceptional student to work in an interdisciplinary collaboration between the host centre, CISTIB Centre for Computational Imaging and Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine (, the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research (, and the Medical Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (, under the supervision of Professor Alejandro Frangi (Professor of Biomedical Image Computing) and Professor Mark Wilkinson (Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery).

This project, funded by the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing of Medical Devices (, seeks to address many of the current barriers to improving the outcomes and success rates of total hip arthroplasty, by tackling the critical path towards personalised and cost-effective medical devices. This project will focus on two areas, the first and main focus, will be on personalised design, and the second, in collaboration with clinical and industrial partners, will pilot bespoke manufacturing. In this project we will develop methods for 3D modelling the pathological bone anatomy from 2D medical imagery, reconstruct the original healthy anatomy, derive models of the bespoke bone implant and fixation guides that enable convenient and solid fixation, simulate and optimise the mechanical strength of the complex bone-implant, and explore the challenges of transforming such models into 3D printed prototypes of the implants.
Further details, and a full description of the project can be found at the Join us! section of our web page:

Eligibility: Applications are invited from Home/EU students only. Candidates should have an undergraduate degree and/or Master’s degree (First or Upper Second Class) in Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, or Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics or Physics and demonstrate outstanding interdisciplinary research potential. The candidate is expected to have advanced programing skills in C++ as well as solid analytical skills in mathematics and physics. Experience in image processing, computer vision, medical image analysis, and computational mechanics will be highly valued. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal communication skills and be a good presenter in written and spoken English. Experience in working within a clinical environment will be highly valued. The candidate should be organised, good team player, self-directed and able to learn new and interdisciplinary areas.

Deadline: The closing date for applications is 17:00 on Friday 15th April 2016
