The Duke Sports Science Institute (DSSI) of the Duke University School of Medicine seeks to recruit an
athletic trainer or physical therapist with a terminal degree (i.e., PhD, EdD, DSc, or ScD) who is interested in
joining the faculty and researchers of the newly renovated, Michael W. Krzyzewski Human Performance Lab
(K-Lab). Qualified applicants must be eligible for licensure as an athletic trainer or physical therapist in the
state of North Carolina. Responsibilities will include: a) assisting the K-Lab director with all aspect of research
including coordination, management, and manuscript/grant preparation; b) development of an independent line
of research consistent with the mission and objectives of the K-Lab, DSSI, and the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery; c) service to the department (e.g., committee work) and to the profession; d) teaching in the Doctor of
Physical Therapy Program; and e) student mentorship/research oversight.
In addition to having an academic doctoral degree applicants are encouraged to have experience and expertise in
shoulder research. The search committee seeks applicants from a diverse pool of candidates with the following
additional qualifications or attributes:
1. Experience in research examining functional joint stability including proprioception and neuromuscular
control in diverse populations including athletes, children, and older adults,
2. Experience and desire to conduct injury/re-injury prevention, rehabilitation, and surgical outcome research,
3. Proficiency in methodology and instrumentation within the K-Lab including electromyographic analysis
(surface and indwelling), motion analysis of the upper/lower extremity; musculoskeletal assessments
including flexibility and strength (isokinetic dynamometer); and postural stability testing,
4. Teaching experience including human movement science and kinesiology,
5. Experience, ability, and willingness to work with a diverse group of collaborators including physicians,
surgeons, athletic trainers, physical therapist, and engineers,
6. Mentorship experience of young investigators including students.
The position is a 12-month core faculty appointment with salary commensurate with qualification and
experience. Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to prepare a 5-year plan that outlines the
candidate’s personal education, research, and service milestones. All interested candidates should send in
