  • Funded PhD in Injury Biomechanics, at Cardiff University (UK) & Charles Owen Ltd

Developing Multi-Material Structures for Enhanced Energy Absorption, for application to Head Protection

The head and brain represent a severe injury risk in some sports (e.g. horse riding, motorsport, American football, cycling), with this research collaboration seeking novel solutions to improve participant protection. Working alongside Charles Owen, a long-established supplier of head safety wear to the equestrian market, this PhD will be looking to develop new and innovative multi-material structures that outperform existing solutions. Building upon the success of the research team, the PhD candidate will be directed to explore the development of novel, geometrically complex structures comprising two or more different materials. It is hoped that these unique configurations will out-perform contemporary head protection materials (typically expanded polystyrene), whilst ultimately being fabricated through technologies that allow for commercially viable, mass-production.

We encourage applicants from a range of disciplines to apply. Mathematicians may bring unique skills in their abilities to quickly develop numerical solutions, whilst mechanical engineers may be able to draw upon their knowledge of solid mechanics. Sports scientists and medical engineers will be able to draw upon their expertise in injury/injury prevention. The successful candidate will ultimately be developed to have all the multi-disciplinary skills required to tackle this complex and exciting problem.

    Start Date: 1st July 2016, or 1st October 2016

This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).
