    Funding PhD Position in Biomechanical and ergonomic modeling of human-machine interaction - University of Toulon - France

    Background

    Biomechanical analysis and modeling are used to characterize through quantitative parameters the human motion. On one hand, this approach helps to understand how different body segments are coordinated during the execution of motor tasks. On the other hand, this approach is used to also to analyze the effects of motor impairments on this joint coordination.

    Recent years, touch technologies have widely increased. Today, the touch devices such as tablets and smartphones occupy an important place in our daily lives (Park and Han, 2010). This democratization can be explained by their easy and intuitive use, the permanent access to any kind of information, or the multiple integrated applications allowing various actions. Some studies in the field of human-machine interaction focused of ergonomic aspects and accessibility of this new technology to make it more efficient and easier to use. However few data are available about the user behavior. Applications are invited for a full time PhD position focusing on biomechanical analysis and ergonomic approach of human motion during touch interaction
    The start date for this position will be September 2016.


    Laboratory

    The candidate will be integrated within the Bio-modeling and engineering Handicap laboratory (Handibio) directed by Professor Philippe Gorce.
    The team is multidisciplinary with engineers and researchers in the fields of biomechanics, ergonomics, signal processing, and health.
    The laboratory's activities are focused on biomechanical analysis and modeling of human movement and the development of technological assistance for people with disabilities. To do this, the laboratory is equipped with many movement analysis tools (high frequency optoelectronic system, EMG and EEG sensors, Kinect, force platform, treadmill and running, wheelchairs, electromagnetic sensors, inertial navigation systems, virtual reality glove) and navigation prototype interfaced with a virtual reality dome.


    Who Should ApplyApplicants should have Masters degree in Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering (or a related discipline). Excellent analytical, computer programming (Matlab) and communications skills are essential. Previous experience in experimental setting and movement analysis is recommended.
