  • Postdoc position: exoskeleton design

We currently have an opening for a Postdoc at the Rehabilitation Engineering Design Lab at BCIT and ICORD, Vancouver, BC. The applicant will also be working in collaboration with our industry partner, a well-established exoskeleton manufacturer.

    Applicants should apply online:

The work will primarily be on our "COMBO" project to design a combination exoskeleton-plus-wheelchair mobility system for people with lower extremity disabilities. Part of our research has focused on better understanding end-user perceptions of the benefits and limitations of exoskeletons, which has led to the development of a new mobility concept that aims to make exoskeleton use easier and more effective for daily use at home and in the community. COMBO is an integrated exoskeleton-wheelchair that aims to provide users the benefits of standing and walking, while at the same time providing the best possible wheeled mobility for normal daily activities. The device includes an exoskeleton with additional mechanical features that allow it to attach to a wheeled frame, while having the ability to be released, as well as also enabling dynamic seated positioning when used as a wheelchair.

We are looking for candidates with a recently completed (or soon to be completed) PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Rehabilitation Engineering, Human Robot Interaction, Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering, or Robotics. And experience in fabrication of Mechatronic/robotic systems, Mechanical design, Robotics and controls, and Human factors / user-centric design.
