  • Open rank faculty position in physical therapy; Medical University of South Carolina

Position Description: The Division of Physical Therapy, housed within the Department and College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), invites applications for a 12-month position as a tenure-track faculty member (open rank) with a research emphasis. The candidate will join a productive team of senior and junior investigators within the Department and College, and will be expected to establish an independently funded research program within their area of expertise. Candidates must have completed doctoral training (PhD, ScD, or equivalent) and post-doctoral research experience is preferred. Current research funding and eligibility for licensure as a physical therapist in South Carolina are preferred, but not required. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the teaching mission of the Division of Physical Therapy. Additional teaching opportunities are available within the Doctoral Program in Health and Rehabilitation Science. Applications from underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged.

Candidates with research expertise in orthopaedics, sports medicine, biomechanics, musculoskeletal imaging, pain, or related topics are particularly encouraged to apply, but candidates with all research backgrounds relevant to rehabilitation will be fully considered. Substantial resources are available to support the successful applicant’s line of research. The College currently has nationally-recognized research strengths in neurorehabilitation, including studies focused on theory-based measurement and treatment of persons with impairments due to stroke, spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions. Support is present to develop and integrate orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research into the College’s portfolio. State of the art laboratory facilities (http://academicdepartments.musc.edu/...ries/index.htm) are currently available to conduct experimental studies in clinical cohorts of interest, and will provide the successful applicant with immediate opportunities for collaboration. Physical Therapy faculty regularly collaborate with researchers in other colleges at MUSC, notably including the College of Medicine and clinical departments.

Institution: The Medical University of South Carolina has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. As South Carolina's only comprehensive academic health science center providing a full range of programs in the biomedical sciences, MUSC is engaged in activities statewide and is acknowledged nationally for excellence in interprofessional education. In FY2015, MUSC faculty received grants and contracts totaling $247 million, with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of over $96 million. The MUSC College of Health Professions itself currently ranks third nationally in NIH funding among colleges of health professions.

Environment: With a rich history, Charleston is America's most beautifully preserved architectural and historical treasure and offers a wide variety of history, culture, arts, recreation and beautiful beaches. Charleston is regularly named as one of the top cities in the country, including three consecutive years as Travel & Leisure’s #1 city in the U.S. and Canada, and five consecutive years as Condé Nast Traveler’s #1 small U.S. city.
