A postdoctoral fellowship in bone mechanics and computational modeling is available at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Brent Edwards (Primary Supervisor) and Steven Boyd (Co-Supervisor). The research activities of the postdoctoral scholar will focus on improvements to the fidelity and clinical throughput of patient-specific finite element (FE) models to predict bone strength based on computed tomography (CT). Specific emphasis will be placed on i) automated image segmentation techniques, ii) extraction of structural anisotropic information from clinical-resolution images, and iii) incorporation of nonlinear, multiaxial behavior and failure of bone. Experimental tests will provide validation of the CT-based FE models using both destructive and non-destructive testing of cadaveric bones under mixed-modes of loading. Utilizing data from two randomized controlled trials, the CT-based FE models will be used to examine the efficacy of bone loss therapies for individuals at high risk for fragility fracture.
The position is open to both domestic and international applicants. This competitive fellowship, funded through the University of Calgary’s Eyes High Initiative (http://ucalgary.ca/research/), offers a salary of $50,000/year for two years. The successful applicant will become part of a unique training and research environment within the multidisciplinary Human Performance Laboratory (http://ucalgary.ca/hpl) and the McCaig Instutute for Bone and Joint Health (http://mccaiginstitute.com). Applicants must be of the highest caliber with a track record competitive for national or international fellowships. A PhD in Natural Science or Engineering is required. Expertise in one or more of the following techniques is expected: materials testing, cadaveric experimentation, advanced imaging analysis, finite element modeling, and computer programing. Applications must be received by October 15th, 2016.
