  • Research Assistant - Spinal Neuromotor Laboratory (Philadelphia, PA, USA)

    The Spinal Neuromotor Laboratory seeks a motivated Research Assistant to aid with our investigations of motor output across the human body. This multiyear project, funded in part by a grant from the NIH/NINDS, will utilize electromyographic (EMG) and kinetic recordings from various muscles and joints to investigate how the human spinal cord produces movement.

    The Research Assistant will assist with most all aspects of experimental setup, data collection, and analysis of high-density EMG signals, and multiple degree-of-freedom load cells. Among other assigned duties, further responsibilities will involve the recruitment and testing of individuals with various neurological impairments, including spinal cord injury, stroke, or Parkinson’s Disease. The incumbent will aid in the implementation of new protocols, develop independence with troubleshooting sensitive research equipment, participate in manuscript publication, and present her/his scholarly work at scientific meetings. The Research Assistant will also have opportunities to work alongside local, national, and international collaborators in an interdisciplinary environment. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Spinal Neuromotor Laboratory is housed within the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Public Health at Temple University. Temple University is a comprehensive public research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America. The Carnegie Foundation has designated Temple as a Research university (highest research activity) and Community Engagement classification for Curriculum Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.

    Required Education and Experience:
    Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related field, and at least six months of related research and at least six months of computer programming experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    Required Skills and Abilities:
    *Demonstrated knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Matlab, LabView, Signal/Spike 2, R, Python, TI-BASIC, VBA).
    *Ability to perform EMG data collection and analysis procedures.
    *Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
    *Demonstrated organizational skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks while adhering to deadlines.
    *Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively collaborate across diverse populations.
