  • PhD projects and scholarship opportunities, Griffith University, Australia.

Griffith University is currently accepting scholarship applications for award in late 2016. Applications opened July 25th, 2016, and will close at midnight (Australian Eastern Standard Time) Monday October 3rd, 2016.

    Research group:

The core group for Innovations in Health Technology, within Menzies Health Institute Queensland, is looking for highly qualified and motivated individuals to fill a number of PhD scholarship positions. Several prospective research projects are detailed below.

    Research projects:

    1) Exploring the links between joint biomechanics and tissue degeneration shortly following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and throughout rehabilitation, as well as in femoroacetabular Impingement patients at both pre- and post- treatment time points.
    2) Investigating deep hip muscle function in femoroacetabular impingement and its influence on joint structure and pathology progression.
    3) The use of three-dimensional body scans, or hull-imaging, to create patient-specific anatomic models for the “Personalized Digital Human Project”.
    4) The use of wearable sensors, such as inertial measurement units, pressure insoles, and EMGs, for the real-time estimation of musculoskeletal tissue loading in the lower limbs.

    Expectations of PhD candidates:

The PhD candidates will work within a cross-disciplinary team comprised of engineers, biomechanists, and clinicians. If successful in securing either an Australian or Griffith funded scholarship, the award will provide living allowances and tuition fees for international students for 3-3.5 years. Similarly, there are scholarships and awards available to domestic students. Griffith’s scholarships web page can be found at the bottom of this advertisement.
Please note we are willing to consider applications from individuals who have secured research funding from sources other than the Australian government or Griffith University. However, the funding may not be sufficient to support a full 3-4 year PhD project, and as such externally funded PhDs will be scrutinized closely.

    Research setting and facilities:

Situated on the beautiful Gold Coast campus of Griffith University, our exceptional research facilities include: two motion capture laboratories (each with 12 Camera Vicon MX systems, dual force plates, Bertec split belt treadmills, 16 channel Zero Wire EMG systems, 16 channel wireless Noraxon IMU and EMG systems), imaging laboratories (pQCT, DEXA, 3D and acoustoelastography ultrasound systems), high-performance computer clusters, a suite of motion capture, computational, and medical image processing software (Matlab, C/C++/C#, Mimics, OpenSim, Vicon Nexus, CMISS), and cell and molecular biology laboratories with imaging and mechanical testing facilities. We are a large research group, including senior professorial staff, post-doctoral research fellows and PhD students.

    Disclaimer:

Please note that the University reserves the right to appoint by invitation and to leave positions vacant.

    How to Apply:

If you are interested, please fist send via email, to Prof David Lloyd (david.lloyd@griffith.edu.au), Dr David Saxby (d.saxby@griffith.edu.au), Dr Claudio Pizzolato (c.pizzolato@griffith.edu.au), and Dr Laura Diamond (l.diamond@griffith.edu.au), the items listed below.
    1) A brief (1-page maximum) covering letter, describing your background, interests, and why you would be a good candidate for one (or more) of the listed research projects.
    2) Your CV.
