Research Chair of the Arms + Hands Lab
‘Lead a Lab with No Boundaries’ and join the No. 1 ranked Rehabilitation Hospital in the U.S., the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) as the Research Chair of the Arms + Hands Lab, a newly created position. Be part of an organization that is changing the paradigm of rehabilitation medicine at the cutting-edge Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, a state-of-the-art prototype for the future, open in March 2017, which will embed researchers and clinicians together – side-by-side – to innovate for the future.
Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, the Research Chair will provide leadership to the scientific teams establishing the road map to realize RIC’s Vision to Advance Human Ability. His/her objectives are to facilitate clinically meaningful research and apply state-of-the-art scientific principles that improve patient function, specifically in the areas of complex arm/hand and reaching skills. Furthermore, this leader will work in a highly collaborative environment which will determine research themes, provide guidance and technical expertise with the Clinical Chairs of all five Innovation Centers. The Research Chair will create synergy among investigators and clinicians in the Arms + Hands Lab that will speed discovery and ensure clinical adoption of discoveries. Researchers and Clinicians will focus on the advancement of hand function and movement, body and upper-limb coordination, strength, reaching and hand control (including finger manipulation). The Research Chair will collaborate with Northwestern University along with other key academic institutions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop strong research vision encompassing innovative approach to solving problems for patients with loss of function in the lower body; must also be able to articulate and communicate the vision broadly.
2. Provide leadership to Arms + Hand Lab, accountable for overall success and effectiveness of entire Lab (as well as for his/her own research pursuits).
3. Provide scientific guidance and experimental advice related to locomotion, gait and walking in medical conditions resulting in loss of lower-body function.
4. Oversee research of principal investigators focused on lower-extremity functions such as walking, running, standing, sitting and balance.
5. Recruit, hire, mentor and develop highly qualified staff with expertise in lower-body function, and who are capable of guiding research consistent with RIC’s Vision.
6. Provide scientific leadership to RIC investigators in Arms + Hands Lab; mentor young researchers and integrate them into ongoing research being performed by more senior investigators.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Doctoral degree in relevant field, e.g. physiology, bio-mechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, biomedical engineering, neural engineering or others.
2. University faculty appointment of Associate Professor or higher.
3. Minimum of ten years’ experience running and growing a large research lab or research group.
4. Proven ability to develop and lead a large, complex, multi-dimensional team that are quality- and outcome-oriented and patient-care-service driven.
5. Proven success competing for federal grants, such as VA, DOD, NIH and NICRR agencies, funding level of approximately $500k/year.
6. Substantial publications, demonstrating leadership in field, establishing credibility and engendering confidence in junior and senior scientists; publication threshold of approximately 100 research reports.
