Ph.D. Position in Human Motor Neuroscience and Neurorehabilitation at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA

One or two funded Ph.D. positions (Teaching Assistantship) are available in the NeuroMotor Control and Plasticity (NMCP) Laboratory in the NeuroMotor Science Program and Department of Kinesiology at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA. This position is available to start in the Fall 2017 semester. The NMCP laboratory focuses on (1) examining neural mechanisms of post-stroke motor coordination, (2) developing neuro-rehab strategies to restore the stroke-specific motor coordination pattern to improve functional movement, (3) the effects of sensory information on motor learning and motor control, etc. The laboratory also has opportunities to study aging and sensory/motor/cognitive functions, and has an access to do research with other neurological populations (ex. Cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, etc). The new graduate students will be enrolled in the NeuroMotor Science Program, a joint interdepartmental program between Departments of Kinesiology and Physical Therapy at Temple University, while receiving mentorship from multiple PIs with varied experience.

    Required Qualifications:
    · B.S. in engineering (mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering), neuroscience, or kinesiology
    · Desire to conduct experimental neuromechanical and/or neurorehabilitation studies
    · Desire to develop experimental neuromechanical and/or neurorehabilitation studies
    · High self-motivation and persistence
    · Strong critical and analytical thinking skills
    · Good work ethic

    Preferred Qualifications:
    · Proficient in the following:
    · Programming in MATLAB
    · Experience in electromyography
    · Human subjects experimental design and statistical analysis
    · Biomechanical experimental techniques including optical motion capture
    · M.S. in a mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering (not required)

The College of Public Health, a constellation of nine academic units of public health, health profession and social work disciplines, enrolls almost 5,000 students. The College has seen remarkable growth and organizational expansion in the shape and configuration of programs, research profile, increase in rankings, and collaboration with other academic units. In 2014, the College ranked 2nd of the 17 colleges/schools at Temple in research expenditures. The College’s innovative research focuses on medical interventions, social, behavioral, and environmental inquiries, and basic science sponsored by NIH, NSF, and other major federal funders as well as foundations. Under the leadership of Dean Laura Siminoff, a public health social scientist continuously funded by NIH for 25 years, CPH is hiring 50 faculty to join the 160 faculty across its academic disciplines.

Temple University is an urban, research-intensive university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Temple is the 6th-largest provider of professional education in the country and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, and Dentistry in addition to research centers including the NCI-designated Fox Chase Cancer Center. Temple is located in historic and culturally-rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 5th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination.

Interested students can contact Dr. Jinsook Roh at jinsook.roh@temple.edu to discuss a possibility to apply for the graduate school and join the laboratory as a PhD student. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Details on the official application guidelines and deadlines for the NeuroMotor Science Program can be found as follows: http://cph.temple.edu/pt/programs-of...or-science-phd. Interested students should explicitly indicate in their statement of purpose that they are interested in working with Dr. Jinsook Roh. The priority application deadline for the Fall 2017 semester is January 15, 2017 to be considered for funding. Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
