Masters by Research Studentship (with stipend)
School of Sport, Health and Applied Science
Applications are invited for a full-time one-year MRes studentship at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, to begin on 26th September 2016. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Lecturers to complete an MRes in the area of clinical measures of paediatric physical function. A bursary of £3000 to cover part of the fees (£5500) will be provided to the successful candidate and will be paid upon successful registration in September 2016. The successful applicant will be based at St Mary’s University in Twickenham and conducting data collection at local schools and children’s groups.
The MRes project will align with a current research project entitled: “Construction of a package of clinical measures of physical function, physical activity and strength in overweight/obese children”. Previous research has demonstrated obese children to have lower physical function in tasks of daily living, be less physically active and have lower strength relative to body size compared to their healthy weight peers. Currently, there is no framework or validated measurements for the clinical musculoskeletal evaluation of obese children. To enable the translation of research findings into clinical practice there is a need to construct a robust package of clinical measures that will inform clinical assessment paradigms. The aim of this study is to construct a robust package of clinical measurement tools to measure physical function, activity and muscle strength in obese children. This work could lead to improved access to multidisciplinary care and better outcomes for children who are obese.
Applicants should possess:
• An undergraduate degree (minimum upper second class) in a sport or health related subject
• Experience in a clinical setting or working with children
• Scored a minimum of an upper second class in an undergraduate degree research project
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills
• Knowledge of research methods and designing projects with a high-level of scientific rigor
To apply, please email your CV and cover letter to ryan.mahaffey@stmarys.ac.uk or send it to: Ryan Mahaffey St Mary’s University Waldegrave Road Strawberry Hill Twickenham TW1 4SX. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 20th September 2016. Interviews will be held on Friday 23rd September 2016.
