The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northern Arizona University invites applications for an open rank faculty position in our program to begin August 2017. We are seeking an individual with research interests that complement our existing strengths in biomechanics, musculoskeletal kinematics, bio-inspired robotics and mechatronics. The applicant will be expected to teach courses in the areas of biomechanics, controls, and kinematics, and other courses that directly support the Bioengineering Ph.D. program and the B.S. and M.S. Mechanical Engineering programs. The successful candidate will: (1) maintain an independent research program that is supported by extramural funding; (2) publish and present research findings in high impact journals and professional meetings; (3) contribute to the teaching mission of the department, including mentoring of undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students, as well as postdoctoral fellows; and (4) perform service for the department, university, and profession. The position is anticipated to be tenure track or tenured as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor rank. Both tenure and rank status are dependent upon 1) a candidate’s documented qualifications and 2) funding available at time of hire. Minimum qualifications Minimum qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track): · PhD in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering area · Primary research emphasis in biomechanics · Show promise of scholarly activity and extramural grant funding Minimum qualifications for the rank of Associate Professor includes all of the above and: · At least six years of substantial evidence of successful teaching in a university setting by the time of hire · At least six years of a strong record of sustained research productivity by the time of hire · Demonstrated success in obtaining extramural grant funding Minimum qualifications for the rank of Professor includes all of the above and: · An additional six years of a sustained pattern of successful teaching at the Associate Professor level by the time of hire · An additional six years of a substantial record of research productivity by the time of hire · At least six years of a sustained record of substantial extramural grant funding by the time of hire · A record of sustained leadership and service to the professional community and within the university setting Preferred qualifications In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicants will be evaluated on the following preferred qualifications: Preferred qualifications for the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) include: · At least one year of postdoctoral research experience completed by August 14, 2017 · One or more years of college teaching experience in the specific course areas listed or equivalent with evidence of teaching success · Experience submitting proposals for external and/or internal research funding · Evidence of research experience complementary with existing faculty · Outstanding communication skills · Demonstrated experience with or commitment to working with students, colleagues, and community members from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. Preferred qualifications for the rank of Associate Professor/Professor include all of the above and: · Demonstrated research expertise as evidenced by an outstanding scholarly record (i.e. publications and grants), including national recognition · Demonstrated sustained effectiveness as a classroom teacher in the specific course areas listed · Demonstrated effectiveness as a research mentor of undergraduate and graduate students · Evidence of sustained research experience complementary with that of faculty in the department · Sustained experience with and commitment to working with students, colleagues, and community members from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds · Active and ongoing extramural-funded research that will be continued at NAU. General Information Northern Arizona University has a student population of approximately 29,000, including more than 21,000 on its main campus in Flagstaff and the remainder at more than 20 locations statewide and online. The Department of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, Forestry, and Natural Sciences, the largest college on the NAU campus, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. These include a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited), a Master of Science in Engineering with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Engineering with a major in Mechanical Engineering. In Fall 2013 we started offering an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in Engineering Sustainable Systems in collaboration with the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability. In Fall 2016 we started offering a Ph.D. in Bioengineering in collaboration with the Department of Biology. The department currently has about 950 students, 16 faculty, and has experienced substantial enrollment growth in the past five years.
