    Highly motivated graduate students interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in the USC Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the University of Southern California are invited to apply.

    Students interested in earning a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering should apply to the doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering and those interested in Integrative Biology degree should apply to the IEB graduate program in Biological Sciences at USC.

    Our research in rehabilitation engineering and human performance biomechanics focuses on the mechanisms humans use to regulate generate and control momentum during functional movements. We integrate emerging technology, experimentation and modeling techniques to study control and dynamics of whole body or task oriented movements. Participants in our studies include elite athletes, performing artists including musicians and dancers, and individuals using assistive devices to preserve mobility (e.g. individuals with spinal cord injury using manual wheelchairs and paralympic sprinters using above and below knee prostheses). By using wearable sensors and integrating technology we are able to study movement mechanics in in realistic contexts (e.g. Olympic competition, workplace, home, research lab, rehabilitation/training environments). We also use our experimental and model simulation results to provide real-time and immediate feedback to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.

    Instrumentation and computing resources in the USC Biomechanics Research Laboratory and our practice gym facility includes: multiple force plates, telemetered electromyography, 3D motion capture software, high speed digital video cameras, high end multiprocessor computers for graphics, simulation, finite element, and modeling applications, data base resources, and multimedia teaching lab.

    Active collaborative relationships include those with USC aerospace and mechanical engineering, interactive media, and computer science as well as with Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, Greater Los Angeles VA Hospital, Colburn School of Music, Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, collegiate athletic teams and US National Governing Bodies of Sport and the US Olympic Committee.

    Strongest consideration will be given to highly motivated applicants with good communication and teamwork skills with an interest in identifying how humans interact with their environment by using
    mechanics, neuromuscular control, and dynamic modeling. Courses often taken by doctoral students in biomechanics are offered within and outside the department in areas like biomedical engineering, integrative biology, computer science, physical therapy, mechanical engineering, and statistics. Doctoral students may apply to become Teaching or Research Assistants and will receive stipends, health benefits, and tuition remission as part of their assistantships or fellowships.
