  • PhD position, Human Movement Biomechanics Group, KU Leuven Belgium

The research group Biomechanics of the Human Movement of the KU Leuven together with the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy of Hasselt University, are looking for a motivated PhD candidate who has distinguished him or herself during or after his/her studies and has a particular interest in the study of human movement and joint loading.

The candidate will perform research in the area of movement and rehabilitation sciences, with a strong focus on the development of new technology that can be used in the rehabilitation of the patients with orthopedic problems of the lower extremity. Mobile registration of health-related parameters is currently in full development. Smartphones are used to track and register heart rate, number of steps, hours spend sleeping and rest. At the moment they are not being used or validated to monitor the functional activity level of patients with orthopedic problems or to evaluate clinical practice. Mechanical joint loading, a biomechanical factor that contributes to the development and the progression of degenerative hip and knee problems,is currently measured using specialized full 3D biomechanical analysis.Defining patient profiles on the basis of total joint loading during several activities of daily living is very relevant for physiotherapists and orthopedic surgeons to evaluate the functional status of the patient. On the basis of the mobile registration of the functional activity and the knowledge about the joint loading per activity is theoretical possible. The project also aims to enable mobile registration of the total joint loading through the use of smartphones, to enable the definition of patient profiles and optimize rehabilitation strategies.

The candidate has excellent study results and is strongly motivated to do a PhD. Knowledge and experience in the field of the particular project are recommendable. A strong interest and passion for biomechanics is essential. Experience with movement simulation and programming (matlab of C++) are advantageous. The successful candidate has excellent communication skills and finds collaborations in a multidisciplinary team an attractive opportunity. He/she has a good knowledge of English. The candidate can write in English in the framework of a PhD transcript.
The candidate has to hold one of the following degrees: Master in Rehabilitation Sciences (preferably specialized in musculoskeletal rehabilitation), Master in Movement Sciences, or Master in (Biomedical) Engineering.

Scholarship for 2x2 years (provided positive interim evaluation).
Employment in a very dynamic and multi-disciplinary team of researchers.
The start date of the project is as soon as possible but will be determined together with the candidate.
