Junior Mechanical/Biomedical Research Engineer / Laboratory Technician
The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory is a research facility within the division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the OHRI/University of Ottawa uniting clinicians and engineers dedicated to basic and applied research of the musculoskeletal system. Multi-disciplinary research efforts focus on implant testing, surgical techniques, joint biomechanics, tendon repair and fracture fixation.
Job Summary:
The lab technician supports research PIs from the Orthopaedics division in the execution of their laboratory research projects and experiments as well as subcontracted work from industry and other researchers involving work on the musculoskeletal system. Responsibilities include coordinating projects’ resources, fixture design, data collection and processing, and the support of laboratory computers and equipment on a day to day basis.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct in-vitro experiments, data collection and processing
- Design fixtures and instrumentation in support of experimental studies
- Maintain laboratory equipment
- Administrative responsibilities include coordinating laboratory experiments, resource scheduling and reporting to research staff
- Train students and residents on laboratory equipment, policies and data analysis
- Contribute to reports and publications, as needed
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree is an asset) in Biomedical\Mechanical Engineering or related discipline with 1-year research experience, or Engineering Technologist with 2-years laboratory research experience.
- Proficiency in CAD software and Matlab
- Experience with computer hardware and software troubleshooting and problem solving
- Previous experience in materials testing, laboratory procedures, experimental Orthopaedics or related research are highly desirable
- Detail oriented and self-motivated with capacity to manage and coordinate several study-related tasks concurrently
- Position involves interaction with staff, residents, and graduate/undergraduate students; successful candidates should have strong interpersonal and communication skills to work in cross-disciplinary teams
- Flexible work hours, some evenings/weekends are a requirement of the position.
This is a full-time 1-year contract position with potential for continuous renewal
