Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD with Dr. Reed Ferber, Director of the Running Injury Clinic in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. With the launch of the Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering (BME) Research Strategy, the Vice President (Research) announced a funding initiative to jump start BIG initiatives in this coming year. These research initiatives involve ambitious interdisciplinary ideas, with far reaching potential, impact. We are pleased that our idea, ‘Sensor Technology in Monitoring Movement (STiMM) Program’ has been selected.
We are seeking a doctoral-level graduate student to engage in high-quality research and join a dynamic research team cross several disciplines on campus. We expect these candidates to be of the highest calibre with a track record that would be competitive for national and international fellowships. Experience with 3D accelerometry is critical, as the successful candidate will work with data from accelerometers/gyroscopes via different wearable technology. Someone who has expertise in Machine Learning or other advanced mathematical methods (e.g., Fractal Scaling Analysis, Neural Network, PCA) and approaches to pattern recognition and identification of complex associations amongst biomechanical variables would be a significant asset.
Research will be carried out in the Running Injury Clinic which has state-of-the-art equipment including multiple wearable technology devices and platforms, an 8-camera Vicon motion capture system, Bertec instrumented treadmill, clinical assessment tools, and excellent computing facilities. The research lab is well funded through various government and research foundation grants as well as philanthropic charitable donations. In addition, the Clinic has a strong history of research and development for the purpose of commercialization and knowledge translation.
The Running Injury Clinic staff, students, and researchers consist of bioengineers, biomechanists, clinical scientists, and certified health professionals (i.e. athletic and physical therapists) all working together in a dynamic research environment.
