A Post doctoral Research position is immediately available in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, in the Rehabilitation Medicine Research Laboratory (Director:Ceren Yarar-Fisher). UAB ranked 10th among US public universities in total NIH funding in 2015.
The current focus in the Rehabilitation Medicine Research Laboratory is understanding:
· the mechanisms by which skeletal muscle adaptation influences the risk of developing metabolic disorders in individuals with SCI;
· the molecular mechanisms by which neuromuscular electrical stimulation intervention influences metabolic and hypertrophic adaptations in the paralyzed muscle;
· the molecular mechanisms by which early utilization of ketogenic diet influences neuro-recovery and metabolism in patients with acute and sub-acute spinal
· the influence of damage to the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) with high level SCI on metabolic function and disease risk
The laboratory has three-funded projects from NIH, NIDILRR, and UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Approaches of studies include molecular biology, protein analyses, gene expression analyses, microbiome, electrophysiology and clinicalresearch/trials in rehabilitation medicine. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in rehabilitation science, kinesiology, exercise science, nutrition,physiology or a related field. The candidate will be expected to write and think independently with passion for innovative research. He/she should be able to analyse data and write manuscripts. Competitive salary (with benefits) will follow NIH guidelines commensurate with training and experience. More info about the department and laboratory can be found at: www.uab.edu/rehab
If interested, please send a letter describing your research experience,interests, and future career goals, your CV, and contact information for three references electronically to Ceren Yarar-Fisher PT, PhD, Assistant Professor,Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, USA; E-mail address: cyarar@uab.edu.
PostdocAwards and Benefits: UAB is a highly collegial and interactive environment that has an active Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE) which provides mentoring and career guidance in addition to that provided by the mentor. Competitive postdoc awards are available including internships, grant incentives, funds to enhance education and collaboration outside UAB, and teaching opportunities at local universities. A Postdoc Research Day with monetary awards is held annually. The OPE encourages UAB research mentors to follow the National Research Service Award stipend level guidelines.
