Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Medical Engineering Group (equivalent grade to Assistant/Associate Professor)

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London

Imperial College is consistently ranked one of the top 10 universities in the world. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London invites applications for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the area of Orthopaedics in the Medical Engineering Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Orthopaedics is becoming an increasingly technology driven field, with advancements now affecting every facet of research and development, from manufacturing to surgery and postoperative assessment. In order to maximise the impact that these technologies will have on healthcare, a new systems-based approach is needed that fully integrates clinical knowledge and needs, biomechanical evidence, and technological innovation to produce novel methods, approaches, devices and processes. This post will bridge the interfaces between Orthopaedic Surgery, Biomechanics and Medical Devices research, which are already well established within the Department, with a view to strengthening the group’s core competencies in Medical Engineering, as well as helping to maximise opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

The person appointed will be expected to teach in a range of areas relevant to mechanical engineering, particularly in areas such as Solid Mechanics, Design and/or Mechatronics.

Applicants must have: a doctoral degree in a relevant field; a strong background and education in Mechanical or Medical Engineering; an outstanding research record in Biomechanics, Biomedical Material Science and/or Medical Devices, preferably with evidence of some demonstrable clinical impact as demonstrated by their publications. As the post is intended to cross disciplines, a track record in multi-disciplinary research in Orthopaedics or a closely related field is essential; Applicants must be excellent communicators, have a proven ability to initiate and lead teaching activities and be able to demonstrate innovation in teaching delivery, course design and assessment. The successful candidate is expected to take an active role in the organisation of our teaching activity across all years and subject areas.
